The Identity Trap: Addressing the American Gun Debate Through the Lens of Manufactroversy

This year, my work received Top Paper distinction from the National Communications Association. I will go on to present this piece at their subsequent conference in November. In this paper, I use the concept of manufactroversy to develop my theory: "The Identity Trap." I argue that this theory illustrates how identity is strategically crafted for supporters of a political cause in order to prolong debate indefinitely and sow discontent.
