Expendable Bodies:
Examining the Connection Between Ecoracism and Embodied Toxicity
to Advance Eco-Social Justice Activism

Although current literature in the environmental humanities establishes the existence of ecoracism and embodied toxicity, there is a lack of direct connection between these two phenomena. I argue that ecoracism, seen in instances like Standing Rock and Maunakea, creates expendable bodies that are either invisible or negligible to the public. In this system, the suffering of these groups similarly goes unseen. This process can be specifically traced to instances of embodied toxicity, in which toxic contamination of communities is ignored by lawmakers.

Since 2015, Stillwater nonprofit StoryArk has highlighted the powerful and diverse voices of the younger generation. This summer camp asks students in grades 6–12 “What’s your story?” and encourages them to express their experiences through different creative mediums.
