Expendable Bodies:
Examining the Connection Between Ecoracism and Embodied Toxicity
to Advance Eco-Social Justice Activism

February 2021

Although current literature in the environmental humanities establishes the existence of ecoracism and embodied toxicity, there is a lack of direct connection between these two phenomena. I argue that ecoracism, seen in instances like Standing Rock and Maunakea, creates expendable bodies that are either invisible or negligible to the public. In this system, the suffering of these groups similarly goes unseen. This process can be specifically traced to instances of embodied toxicity, in which toxic contamination of communities is ignored by lawmakers.

'What’s Your Story?': StoryArk Amplifies the Voices of Marginalized Youths

August 2020

Since 2015, Stillwater nonprofit StoryArk has highlighted the powerful and diverse voices of the younger generation. This summer camp asks students in grades 6–12 “What’s your story?” and encourages them to express their experiences through different creative mediums.

"Vivian has been my student in Communication for nearly 4 years. From the beginning, she has demonstrated an aptitude for writing and for oral presentation that so far outpace her peers, it is truly staggering. Her maturity and organization mean she consistently brings projects from inception to fruition on deadline. She is one of the finest students I have ever taught and I would hope any employer would recognize what a gift they would receive in bringing on Vivian to a team."
